Working in partnership with South Cambridgeshire Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Sawston Village College plans to work with an artist to create and erect a sculptural work in the Principal’s Garden on the school site. The Principal’s Garden is the large area of school grounds immediately to your left as you enter Sawston Village College through the main entrance. This would be an ideal location for a sculpture as there is currently no main point of interest in this space. Furthermore, it is a public-facing space and so a sculptural work in this location would be able to be enjoyed by all visitors to the College, as well as pupils and staff.
The design for the sculpture will be developed by a group of pupils. At this stage, it is envisaged that ‘remembrance’ will be the theme for the sculpture. This will tie in with current WW1 commemoration activities, and it will also complement the work of this project to research the lives of soldiers in WW1.
SCDFAS has identified an artist to work on the project. The artist, Neil Jones, who is now London-based, is originally from the local area and attended Sawston Village College. He would aim to work with pupils (and perhaps also community members) to design and build the piece. Examples of his previous work are given below:
